Can you offer any suggestions or ideas, or at least help get me pointed in the right direction?I would be grateful! But it should not manifest as a speed problem.

In general, programmed I/O happens when software running on the CPU uses instructions that access I/O address space to perform data transfers to or from an I/O device. Any ideas as to how to make it a bit faster. If it says something about i/o errors, check the cableing of the drive. Having a bit of a burning issue? (video, data, isos, anything).
